Answers to common questions about our materials, processes, and care.
A: We are located at 230 Avondale Street Hamilton, Ontario. We have an open-door policy, so anyone is welcome to come by and see the shop and our showroom whenever we are open.
A: We exclusively use locally sourced and salvaged wood. Our primary species include Walnut, White Oak, Red Oak, Maple, and Ash. We occasionally carry other local species in smaller quantities depending on what has been salvaged.
A: We build almost anything out of wood. Our custom work includes but is not limited to shelving, cabinetry, interior trim, charcuterie boards, and custom epoxy/river tables. If you have a custom project in mind, we can likely build it.
A: Yes. We specialize in custom epoxy work, including full river tables and epoxy void fills. We finish our tables using professional spray finishes for a highly durable, premium result.
A: Yes, our shop is equipped with a 4x4 CNC machine. We can do custom 3D routing, precise dimensional cutting, wood engravings, and prepare slabs for complex epoxy fills.
A: Yes. Alongside our natural wood spray finishes, we also offer custom painting and finishing for cabinets, trim, and other millwork projects.
A: Our standard shop rate is $90 per hour. However, this rate can fluctuate depending on the material. For example, working with epoxy or hitting hidden metal in wood dulls our blades and sanding paper much faster, which can incur additional fees to cover tooling replacements.
A: Yes, we have an on-site iDry vacuum kiln. Vacuum kiln drying is one of the fastest and highest-quality methods to dry wood, ensuring the lumber is stable and ready for furniture building.
A: For indoor furniture and cabinetry in our climate, the ideal wood moisture content is between 6% and 8%. Wood that is not properly dried to this level will warp, crack, or twist inside a climate-controlled home. Our iDry vacuum kiln ensures the wood reaches this perfect equilibrium.
A: To save time (and hourly shop rates), please clean your wood before bringing it in. Remove any loose bark, and scrub away any rocks or gravel embedded in the grain. Most importantly, you must check the wood for metal.
A: You should visually inspect the wood for old nail holes, screws, or black/blue staining in the wood grain, which usually indicates iron or steel is buried inside. We highly recommend scanning your wood with a handheld metal detector wand. Hitting hidden metal instantly ruins our expensive planer blades and CNC bits, which will result in additional tooling charges added to your bill.
